Japanese architecture and his coastal surroundings are key influences in Noel Whelan's work. A cabinetmaker, he combines contemporary styling and traditional techniques and strives for classic proportions and the harmonious blending of light and dark native hardwoods. Supplying the Irish and export market from his Waterford showroom, tables sell from €1500 with this chest of drawers costing €1600.

"I start with an idea, develop sketches arid make a prototype .Apiece can look great on paper but I doesn't necessarily mean that it will work,' he says.
The huge amount of repeat business proves that clients are more than content with the pieces that make the grade. "It's great when you get a positive reaction," he adds.

Growing up art and architecture were his interests but the hands-on appeal of furniture making won out. "Furniture is similar to architecture anyway. I like use large overhangs and curves which are typical of Japanese architecture," he says.
